GLOBAL RE-VISIONS is an alternative view of the twelve most photographed places in the world, according to the site 1000 Memories in the year 2012. I chose these locations from SightsMap, an interactive map created by Tanel Tammet. This map uses real-time data from Panoramio, a geolocation service and website to share pictures, which belongs to Google. By means of a digital process, I fragment, blend, distort, and stretch the image to create a new visual aesthetic and pictorial representation of this geographic location. Some images are made by myself, others are appropriated from the plethora of photos found on the Internet and social media websites. The visceral capture of images of everything we see and consume, along with the immediate and global distribution, has created a superficial bubble that changes every second and exceeds our capacity and ability to contemplate reality. These locations are photographed and uploaded online thousand of times everyday and we have become numb and passive to their presence and significance. This project is not an attempt to criticize the photography medium itself nor technology for that matter, but to that social media “share button” that our global culture is viciously addicted to. My reinterpretation of these images is intended to force the viewer to use his/her imagination in order find new meaning in the spatial coordinates of the image. In the words of Susan Sontag: "Photography is, above all, a way of looking. It is not the same to look.” Therefore, if a good picture helps the viewer to look and see, this photographic series aims to capture the attention of an specific space, both in the visual field and the rest of the senses (2016).
RE-VISIONES DE MUNDO es un mirada alterna de los 12 lugares más fotografiados en el mundo, de acuerdo con el sitio 1000 Memories para el año 2012. Utilicé el mapa interactivo SightsMap, creado por Tanel Tammet, que se sirve de datos en tiempo real de Panoramio, un servicio de geolocalización y un sitio web para compartir fotografías, perteneciente a Google. Mediante un proceso digital, fragmento y distorsiono la imagen para crear una nueva representación visual y estética de un lugar geográfico, sobre el que es posible hallar una infinidad de fotografías en Internet y en las redes sociales. La captura visceral de imágenes de todo lo que vemos y consumimos, junto con la distribución inmediata y global, ha creado una burbuja superficial que se mueve a una velocidad que excede nuestra capacidad de contemplar la realidad. Este proyecto no es una crítica hacia la fotografía en sí misma, sino hacia el botón de share de las redes sociales. Mi reinterpretación de las imágenes tiene el propósito de forzar al espectador a usar la imaginación, a fin de resignificar las coordenadas espaciotemporales del paisaje o monumento fotografiado . En palabras de Susan Sontag: “La fotografía es, antes que nada, una manera de mirar. No es la mirada misma.” Entonces, si una buena foto ayuda al espectador a ver, esta serie fotográfica pretende la atención frente a un espacio concreto, tanto en el campo visual como en el resto de los sentidos (2016).
